I work at an Apple Premium Reseller and I saw a lot of this. We recieve lots of macbook airs with a huge cap. under “Other”. A co-worker pointed to us that if you delete your old user account and create a new one it will surprisingly be gone. of course you have to back up and move your data before that.I have been trawling the internet for days trying to find out how i can fix my problem. I followed the instructions here to remove about 200gb of movies . I trashed and restarted. If you have lot of songs downloaded on Apple Music, turn on “Optimise Storage” at Settings/Music/Optimise Storage, but then for the minimum storage choose “None”. It won’t set a limit for your music, but for me it reduced “System” by many GBs.The size of Other is often quite large in Mac OS X and it varies considerably as you can see in the various screen shots here, but again, this is not something to overly concern yourself with as it could be in the iOS world. This morning, with DaisyDisk, I realized that my Drive Genius logs were taking up ~20GB. Those were mostly in ~/Library/Logs/com_prosofteng_logs/DriveGenius/dp. I don't launch Drive Genius often these days, so I assume these are from its Drive Pulse app (which I'm not keen on anyway). I opened that folder and saw a few very large .tlg files in there. Before just manually deleting them, I launched Drive Genius... and watched it wipe them away. However, my Mac thinks the hardrive is full. When I look at the About this Mac storage tab, it shows over 180GB of documents that I know are on dropbox smart-sync online only Windows 10 and OS X 10.11… I saw this at the end of the article, first, isn’t Yosemite 10.10? Regardless, seems like even running ODS in sudo mode and with Full Disk Access enabled still doesn't help it keep from missing a lot of stuff.Cache, it’s short for “crap all web sites you visit hook into your computer to remember you with.” These files pull on your os and thus reduce its ability to respond like lightning and carry greater loads. Your trusted web sites like banking are ok but non essentials will be like an ant hill if you don’t clear them from time to time. Hey not knowing yellow from blue isn’t as bad as green from red :)!Apple software is also pretty half-baked, don’t be surprised if things are erroneously assigned to Other it happens all the time on iPhone. Checking your storage on Mac isn't difficult - but managing it can be. One of the more curious System Junk is where those pesky cache files are, along with log files. You can choose 'show' to see.. Things like iCloud Photo Library's cache at 25GB (which shouldn't cache since I store my photo library on an external drive!), Chrome's "File System" at 15GB, and my 50GB Downloads folder (oops!) are taking up space, for sure.I just free'd up over 650Gb of space by removing the log files and turning off connection logging. Interestingly, here are two screenshots, one from DaisyDisk and the other from OmniDiskSweeper. Same drive, completely different results. DD shows 348GB for "Users" while OmniDiskSweeper shows 247GB. I would be more inclined to believe what the du command has to say than any 3rd party app is reporting as without having knowledge of what API's they are using to come up with their data, it is hard to say exactly what they are reporting on and how they handle errors for data that they do not have permissions to view. Most likely they just skip the files/folders that they do not have permissions to see even if they should have admin privileges as that is not always the same as su on macOS from what I have seen.In looking a little deeper at ODS vs. DD (albeit still quickly), the issue seems to be a discrepancy between them in the size of my ~/Library folder. And, looking in there, seems ODS doesn't see my ~/Library/Mail folder at all. I have both apps added to Mojave's "Full Disk Access" list but obviously something's missing.Is there any way I can do this without restarting my iPhone completely? I don’t want to risk losing everything on my iPhone…

Everything that is yours and makes your computer yours, and most of us have lots of stuff on our Macs. I think Apple should maybe relabel it, because there are many hangups from iPhone users who are used to “Other” growing to be gigantic because of some poor garbage collection in iOS. But still, with that, it's very much possible to manage my storage well-under the 500GB "limit". In the studio that machine still has only 250GB on the boot disk, and happily supports two users, albeit just for business tasks, audio record, and obviously podcasting.DaisyDisk is definitely the simplest one to run in terms of seeing everything.
